Recently a friend in the States asked me frankly, “What is a formation?  I have never heard that word used the way you are using it.”  Point taken…

“Formation” is the French word for “training” and a word that we use in Peace Corps to indicate a training or workshop.  When speaking to a Malian, or another person who speaks French, we say, “formation” with the appropriate French accent, but because the word can also be said in English (without a French accent) we still use it.  I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion that I’m sure you have all experienced in reading my blog, which is chock-full of references to “formations!”
